In this newsletter, we like to write about a very intriguing mask in our collection.

In the remote forests of the Democratic Republic of Congo, long before African art filled galleries and private collections, masks like this Basonge masterpiece emerged only in moments of great spiritual importance. To the Songye people, it was never merely wood — it was a vessel of force, feared and respected, believed to awaken ancestral spirits when the drums began to echo through the night. Its powerful horned silhouette and hypnotic geometric carvings were created to stop a viewer in their tracks, commanding both awe and unease in equal measure. Imagine the firelight flickering across this face centuries ago, as dancers disappeared into trance and villagers fell silent before a presence they believed was no longer entirely human. The deep worn patina, ritual abrasions, and aged contours are not signs of age alone — they are evidence of a life once lived in ceremony, secrecy, and sacred power. Few surviving masks carry this level of raw sculptural intensity, where every angle feels both ancient and startlingly modern at the same time. This is the kind of object that transforms a room instantly, not because it decorates a space, but because it dominates it with mystery and history. For the serious collector, pieces like this are impossible to replace — once they disappear into another collection, they rarely return to the market again.
