In this newsletter, we like to write about a very interesting Pass token used during the German South West African period 1904–1915, which are featured in our collection.

Few artifacts tell the story of German South West Africa as powerfully as an original Omaruru Pass Token. At first glance, it is only a small piece of stamped metal, yet it once represented an entire colonial system in which every number was linked to a human life, a name, and a personal story recorded in government registers. Omaruru, situated in the very heart of present-day Namibia, was one of only 26 official locations where these pass tokens were issued, making each surviving example directly traceable to a specific administrative district. This particular token is accompanied by its original documentation, signed by Der Kaiserliche Bezirksmann, Dr. Fuchs, and dated 18 May 1904—a remarkable detail that firmly anchors it to one of the most pivotal moments in the colony's history. Imagine the countless journeys this token has survived—passing through checkpoints, settlements, dusty roads, and more than a century of dramatic change before reaching today's collector. Unlike medals created to celebrate victory, this is an object that preserves history exactly as it happened, carrying both the weight of the past and the authenticity that only genuine use can create. Its original serial number, documented place of issue, and exceptional provenance elevate it far beyond a simple collectible; it is a tangible witness to one of Africa's most significant colonial chapters. For the serious collector of German colonial history, African historical artifacts, or rare exonumia, opportunities to acquire an original Omaruru Pass Token with documented provenance such as this are exceptionally scarce—and once placed in a private collection, they rarely reappear.
