Token 32 – Southern Africa – “GOOD FOR IN TRADE – 3 PENCE” Trade Token, c. late 19th–early 20th century

Original 3 Pence private trade token bearing the inscription “GOOD FOR IN TRADE – 3 PENCE”, with a single dot on each side and the same basic design appearing on both faces.

This piece belongs to the wider British and Southern African merchant-token tradition, in which privately issued tokens were used in commercial transactions for goods or services rather than functioning as official coinage.

The 3 Pence denomination is particularly interesting to collectors of Southern African exonumia. British currency denominations were widely used throughout Southern Africa during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, and privately issued tokens frequently adopted these familiar denominations.

An essentially matching “GOOD FOR IN TRADE – 3 PENCE” type has been documented in connection with Swakopmund, with a recorded example described as approximately 21 mm, 4 g and made of brass. This provides an interesting and plausible Swakopmund / German South West Africa connection, although the anonymous nature of the token means that the attribution cannot be regarded as certain.

The token's silver-coloured appearance should not automatically be taken as evidence of silver. A documented matching example is described as brass, and the surface appearance of this piece is consistent with a copper-alloy token.

Although this example shows more wear and surface deterioration than Token 31, the inscription and denomination remain clearly recognisable. It is therefore still an interesting original survivor of the Southern African private trade-token tradition.
