Swakopmund was founded on August 4, 1892 by Captain von Francois, it was part of German Southwest Africa and was to be the main port of the colony, as access to Walfischbucht (British) 30km to the south was denied. 
1892 - 7 inhabitants. 2024 - over 60,000 inhabitants.

Namibia has been independent since March 21, 1990.
