Token 28 – DSWA – German South West Africa – Hotel Kronprinz, Windhuk – 50 Pfennig Werth-Marke, c. 1902–1918

Original Werth-Marke from the historic Hotel Kronprinz in Windhuk, German South West Africa.

The token bears “Hotel Kronprinz Windhuk” on the obverse and “50” on the reverse, representing a value of 50 Pfennig. The specialist Opalka catalogue records the 50 Pfennig type as a round copper token of approximately 22.5 mm.

Importantly for collectors, the Hotel Kronprinz issued a series of Werth-Marken in several denominations: 10, 25, 50 and 100 Pfennig. The 25 Pfennig denomination is therefore a particularly interesting companion piece to the 50 Pfennig token, and collectors of complete Hotel Kronprinz series may wish to acquire both denominations.

The Hotel Kronprinz was one of the notable hotels of historic Windhuk, making its tokens an attractive combination of German colonial history, Windhuk history and private token currency.
