As a young assistant doctor on the cruiser frigate S. M. S. Elisabeth, the author took part in the ship's two-year voyage around the world, which was to be of such immense importance for Germany, without the participants realizing it at the time of departure. In the summer of 1884, the ship's commander hoisted the German imperial flag in German South-West Africa and the Australian island world and took part in the acquisition of German East Africa. With this, Germany had finally joined the ranks of the colonial powers. The author describes the political contexts and the current events during the occupation of the colonies, and finally gives a brief overview of their fate from 1918 to the present day. How one traveled around the world 50 years ago, partly under sail, partly with steam, what adventurous things could happen on one of these old ships, how the foreign continents and countries (Africa, Australia, China, India, Japan) presented themselves to the eyes of a European at that time, how difficult even the daily necessary catering was - all this is described by one of the few still living eyewitnesses of that voyage.
