In this newsletter, we like to write about an original Enamel sign: Kaiserliche Post - Imperial Post - which was used during the German South West African period 1898 - 1915, Imperial German Post Office Sign, which are featured in our collection.

This exceptional original large-format enamel sign of the Imperial German Post Office (Kaiserliche Reichspost) represents a remarkable and tangible testimony to the history of German colonial administration in German South West Africa (today Namibia).

Manufactured from heavy, slightly curved steel sheet with high-quality vitreous enamel, the sign displays the Imperial German eagle beneath the imperial crown, together with the distinctive inscription "Kaiserliche Post". Measuring approximately 75 × 55 cm and weighing around 6 kg, it corresponds to the official sovereign emblems used on government postal buildings and post agencies throughout the German Empire.

Following the establishment of the colony in 1884, the Imperial German postal service created an extensive communication network across German South West Africa, with postal stations established in important settlements including Windhoek, Swakopmund, Lüderitzbucht, Omaruru, Karibib and Keetmanshoop. These enamel signs served as highly visible symbols of German state authority and marked official imperial institutions throughout the territory.

After the South African occupation of the colony in 1915, many German imperial emblems were removed, destroyed or replaced. As a result, original surviving examples from this period are now exceptionally scarce, particularly those connected with the former German colony of South West Africa.

The present sign possesses a powerful authentic character. The original colours, quality of the enamel surface and finely executed details of the imperial eagle remain remarkably well preserved. Age-related enamel losses and areas of oxidation are mainly visible along the edges, consistent with many decades of outdoor exposure and official use. Far from diminishing its appeal, this genuine patina enhances the historical authenticity of the piece and strongly supports its originality rather than a modern reproduction.

According to oral provenance provided by the founder of Peter's Antiques, Swakopmund, this sign originated from Namibia and remained in his private collection for many years. The provenance is based on a longstanding and credible oral history connected with the collection.

Original enamel signs of the Kaiserliche Reichspost are highly sought-after by collectors of German postal history, colonial history and imperial memorabilia. Examples with a reported connection to the territory of present-day Namibia appear only rarely on the international collectors' market.

This remarkable enamel sign is therefore far more than a decorative historical object. It is a rare surviving artefact documenting the presence of the German Imperial postal system in South West Africa and a unique piece of the political, cultural and communication history of colonial Namibia.
