Anmärsche zu den Kämpfen am Waterberge \/ u.a. -- Der Völkermord an den Herero und Nama geschah während und nach der Niederschlagung von Aufständen der Herero und Nama gegen die deutsche Kolonialmacht in der Kolonie Deutsch-Südwestafrika während der Jahre 1904 bis 1908. Der durch Existenzängste geschürte Aufstand begann im Januar 1904 mit dem Angriff der Ovaherero unter Samuel Maharero auf deutsche Einrichtungen und Farmen. Da die Schutztruppe der Kolonie dem anfangs nicht gewachsen war, entsandte die Reichsleitung daraufhin umgehend Verstärkung. Durch etwa 15.000 Mann unter dem Befehl von Generalleutnant Lothar von Trotha wurde der Aufstand der Herero bis zum August 1904 niedergeworfen. Der größte Teil der Herero floh daraufhin in die fast wasserlose Omaheke-Wüste. Trotha ließ diese abriegeln und Flüchtlinge von den wenigen dort existenten Wasserstellen verjagen, so dass Tausende Herero mitsamt ihren Familien und Rinderherden verdursteten. Trotha ließ ihnen im sogenannten Vernichtungsbefehl mitteilen: \"Die Herero sind nicht mehr Deutsche Untertanen. […] Innerhalb der Deutschen Grenze wird jeder Herero mit oder ohne Gewehr, mit oder ohne Vieh erschossen, ich nehme keine Weiber und keine Kinder mehr auf, treibe sie zu ihrem Volke zurück oder lasse auch auf sie schießen.\" Die Kriegsführung Trothas zielte auf die vollständige Vernichtung der Herero ab (\"Ich glaube, dass die Nation als solche vernichtet werden muß\"); sein Vorgehen gilt in der Wissenschaft als erster Völkermord des 20. Jahrhunderts. Trotha wurde darin vom Chef des Generalstabs Alfred Graf von Schlieffen (\"Der entbrannte Rassenkampf ist nur durch Vernichtung [.] der einen Partei abzuschliessen\") und Kaiser Wilhelm II. unterstützt. Angesichts der Vorfälle erhoben sich im Oktober 1904 die Nama unter ihren Kapteinen Hendrik Witbooi und Jakob Morenga. Von der Kriegsführung gegen die Herero lernend, vermieden die Nama eine offene Schlacht gegen die deutsche Besatzung und begannen einen Guerillakrieg. Durch den Tod Witboois, Morengas und weiterer Anführer demoralisiert, fügten sich schließlich fast alle Nama-Gruppen den deutschen Unterwerfungsverträgen, so dass der Krieg am 31. März 1907 für beendet erklärt wurde. Doch damit war die koloniale Vernichtungspolitik nicht beendet. Im Anschluss an die Kampfhandlungen wurden die Herero und Nama in Konzentrationslagern interniert, in denen annähernd jeder zweite Insasse starb. Von dem um 1904 auf rund 60.000 bis 80.000 Personen geschätzten Hererovolk lebten 1911 geschätzt nur noch 20.000 Personen.
